What is infertility?

Infertility is not being able to become pregnant, despite trying for one year or having multiple miscarriages or stillbirths.

One-third of infertility problems are due to the man, and one-third of the time, the cause isn’t known or results from fertility issues with both partners. Treatment with Dr. Sassoon significantly increases your chance of becoming pregnant.

Infertility can happen to anybody, but some factors increase your risk. Examples include:

  • Endometriosis
  • Ovulation disorders
  • Uterine or cervical abnormalities
  • Early menopause
  • Fallopian tube blockage or damage
  • Cancer or cancer treatment
  • Pelvic adhesions
  • Being older than 35
  • Alcohol and tobacco use
  • Being overweight or underweight

To reduce your risk of infertility, eat a healthy diet, get regular exercise, maintain a healthy weight, limit caffeine, and avoid smoking and drinking alcohol.

To diagnose infertility and its cause, Dr. Sassoon and his team review your fertility history, ask about symptoms you may have, and complete a physical exam – including a pelvic exam.

He might recommend blood tests, ultrasound, other imaging procedures, hysteroscopy, or laparoscopy. Your infertility treatment plan depends on what’s causing it and your preferences.

To treat the underlying cause of infertility and increase your chances of becoming pregnant, Dr. Sassoon might suggest:

Fertility medications

Taking certain medications can stimulate ovulation if you have an ovulation disorder associated with infertility.

Intrauterine insemination

During intrauterine insemination or IUI, Dr. Sassoon can place healthy sperm directly into your uterus during the time of the month your body ovulates.

Gynecological surgery

If you have a gynecological condition, such as endometriosis, uterine polyps, fibroids, or intrauterine scar tissue, Dr. Sassoon might recommend laparoscopic surgery to correct the problem and increase your chance of becoming pregnant.

In vitro fertilization (IVF)

During IVF, your provider retrieves multiple eggs, fertilizes them with your partner’s sperm in a petri dish, and implants embryos into your uterus. IVF and other fertility treatments may increase the chance you’ll have multiple pregnancies, such as twins or triplets.

If you’ve tried getting pregnant on your own without success, call the office at ALT•HER NYC or schedule an appointment online today.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces and reshapes the labia minora (inner vaginal lips) and sometimes the labia majora (outer vaginal lips). This functional procedure addresses concerns about size, shape, asymmetry, or discomfort caused by elongated or irregular labial tissue.

Vaginal rejuvenation, vagina tightening sugery, and vaginal reconstruction treatments offer the potential to revitalize your sex life along with addressing issues related to menstruation and bladder control.

Only if necessary. This area is not usually altered during labiaplasty, but may be necessary for women with excessive skin surrounding the clitoris. This can be discussed during the initial consultation.
