What is menopause?
Menopause is a natural phase of every woman’s life that marks the completion of your menstrual cycles.
You officially reach menopause once you’ve gone 12 months without having a menstrual period or spotting. At this point, your cycles stop permanently, and you can’t get pregnant.
Before menopause, you may experience a long transition called perimenopause for 4-5 years. Perimenopause can last for several years, during which you may notice some of these common changes:
During this time, your body experiences hormone fluctuations that can cause a multitude of unpleasant symptoms.
What are the symptoms of menopause?
It’s common to experience a variety of symptoms while you transition through menopause. Some typical symptoms of menopause include:
Your symptoms may range from mild annoyances to major interferences with your ability to enjoy life.
When does menopause occur?
The average age for menopause in the United States is 52, but it can happen any time in your 40s or 50s, with a typical age range of 45-58. You may begin to notice the symptoms of perimenopause earlier during your 40s.

It’s important to continue seeing Dr. Sassoon for regular women’s wellness exams throughout menopause.
How do you treat menopause symptoms?
If you’re experiencing discomfort from menopause symptoms, Dr. Sassoon works with you to develop a treatment plan for relief.
First, he performs a comprehensive physical exam and reviews your medical history. He asks questions about your symptoms, sexual history, and address any specific concerns you may have.
If vaginal dryness, painful sex, or mild urinary incontinence are a concern, they may recommend nonsurgical vaginal rejuvenation. For other symptoms, they may recommend lifestyle changes or medications to reduce pain.
