What is PCOS?

Polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, is a hormone disorder that affects women of childbearing age. Due to a hormone imbalance, it can cause adverse side effects associated with excess androgen, a male hormone, and lead to problems with ovulation.

The cause of PCOS isn’t entirely clear, but seeking early treatment can reduce your risk of health complications.

Common signs and symptoms associated with hormone imbalance and PCOS include:

  • Irregular periods
  • Acne
  • Weight gain
  • Excess facial or body hair
  • Skin darkening
  • Skin tags
  • Infertility

Complications associated with untreated PCOS can include diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, endometrial cancer, sleep apnea, depression, and miscarriage or premature birth.

To find out if you have a hormone imbalance or PCOS, Dr. Sassoon reviews your medical history and symptoms. He asks you about weight changes and your menstrual cycle. He also completes a physical exam, checking for acne, excess hair growth, and other signs of PCOS.

During a pelvic exam, Dr. Sassoon examines your reproductive organs and checks for abnormalities, growths, or masses. He might recommend a blood test to evaluate hormone levels, glucose tolerance, cholesterol, and triglycerides, or use ultrasound to view your uterus and ovaries.

To treat hormone imbalances associated with PCOS, Dr. Sassoon and his team might recommend:

Lifestyle changes

To reduce symptoms associated with PCOS, maintain a healthy weight, lose weight if you’re overweight, limit carbohydrates, and get regular exercise.

Birth control pills

Taking birth control pills containing estrogen, progestin, or both helps better regulate your hormones and periods. Birth control pills might also decrease excessive facial or body hair growth.

Medications

To stimulate ovulation and improve fertility, Dr. Sassoon might suggest you take oral medications or receive injections. He lets you know which drugs, if any, are right for you. Medications can also reduce excess hair growth and help you better control blood sugar and body weight.

Don’t live with the hormone imbalance that comes with PCOS when simple treatments can help you become pregnant or reduce unpleasant symptoms. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Sassoon and his team at ALT•HER NYC by phone or book online today.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces and reshapes the labia minora (inner vaginal lips) and sometimes the labia majora (outer vaginal lips). This functional procedure addresses concerns about size, shape, asymmetry, or discomfort caused by elongated or irregular labial tissue.

Vaginal rejuvenation, vagina tightening sugery, and vaginal reconstruction treatments offer the potential to revitalize your sex life along with addressing issues related to menstruation and bladder control.

Only if necessary. This area is not usually altered during labiaplasty, but may be necessary for women with excessive skin surrounding the clitoris. This can be discussed during the initial consultation.
